False! Diet Soda may not contain sugar, but it has a fairly large amount of sugar, which is just as bad for your enamel.

The idea that something is not a threat to your oral health simply because it does not contain sugar is a dangerous misconception that has led to some unhealthy food choices. In order to truly understand the risks drinking diet soda poses to your oral health, we must first understand the causes of tooth decay.

What Is the True Cause of Tooth Decay?

While there is no doubt that sugar is bad for your teeth, and that it is a major contributor to tooth decay, it is by no means the only threat to your oral health, and it might not even be the biggest one. The true cause of tooth decay is a type of bacteria called dental caries. Although no one is born with dental caries in their mouth, almost everyone picks it up as a baby, usually by sharing food and utensils with family members.

Dental caries feed on sugar and then excrete a very corrosive acid. This acid is so strong that it eats away at your enamel, even though it is the strongest substance in your body. This is how decay happens. Dental caries converts sugar to acid, and the acid corrodes your enamel.

Food acids, like the kind found in diet sodas, exacerbates the the decay process by weakening the enamel protecting your teeth. When your enamel is softened by the acid in the food you eat and drink, it only makes it that much easier for the acid excreted by dental caries to damage your teeth.

If tooth decay is caught early, it is pretty easy to treat. A small cavity can be filled in one visit to our office in San Carlos. But if tooth decay goes untreated, it can become a serious health risk. If the acid from dental caries is allowed to get all the way through your enamel and into the soft pulp at the center of your tooth, the you’re likely in store for a root canal. And if it get any worse than that, extraction may be the only solution.

The Acids in Diet Soda

The most common acids you will find in diet sodas are phosphoric acid and citric acid. Both are very corrosive, and it is hard to find a soda, diet or otherwise, that doesn’t have one or both of these. They are especially common in diet soda because they help give the drink a tangy bite that is missing from the artificial sweeteners used.

Better Make It a Water

The best thing you can do to protect your teeth from dental caries is to drink plenty of water. In fact, water is really the only thing safe enough on your teeth that you can drink it all day, and you should. Water will help keep your mouth free of bacteria and the food particles that feed them, as well as counteract the effects of acid.
