It’s that time of year, and our San Carlos, CA, dental patients are not immune to the hustle and bustle of the back to school to-do lists. Parents and kids have lots of things they want to accomplish this time of year, and the list seems to grow longer as your child ages!

From new school supplies and backpacks to new shoes and clothes, you’ll find all of the malls and department stores filled with parents and their students this time of year. Not only is your family purchasing an entire new collection for each student, but you are making time for haircuts, sports physicals, and those remaining things you’ve been wanting to do all summer.

The Back to School Frenzy

Amidst all of this frenzy, we are going to ask you to add one more thing to your to-do list. We believe it is one of the most important things you can do for your students before the school year begins: have a dental cleaning and exam.

We know you have so many other things on your mind, but believe us when we tell you that a routine dental cleaning and exam can set your child up for a successful start to the school year. Your young student knows the difference between a clean mouth and an unclean mouth, and that could be the difference between having a great start to the school year or not.

How a Dental Appointment Can Help Your Child

Think about how you feel after a dental cleaning. Your teeth are smooth, there’s no plaque in your mouth, and you just feel so confident and happy to be smiling! Your child has the same experience, and it can make them feel so much better about the beginning of the school year! Below are more benefits to having a back to school dental cleaning done.

More Confidence – Let your child tackle the hallways with more confidence that comes with having a beautiful, healthy smile. Socializing in school is difficult enough, so give your child the upper hand with a boost in self-esteem!

Better Attention Span – Poor oral health can be a huge distraction for kids, especially if they are in pain from decay. If it’s been awhile since your child was in for an appointment, be sure to bring them in now. You don’t want them to be struggling with a cavity while they are trying to concentrate on what the teacher says!

Fewer Sick Days – One of the best things you can do for your child is make sure they are in school as much as possible. Make sure your child is out fewer days by taking care of dental work before the school year begins! A healthier mouth means a healthier student!

Start at Home with Hygiene

Coming into the office is great for you and your child, but there is a lot of work that needs to happen at home, too. Just as your child’s teacher expects your student to practice work at home, we also expect your child to care for their teeth at home! A lot of that responsibility falls on you, the parent, to be sure your child has the tools and time to do that correctly.

Brushing – The ADA recommends brushing twice each day for at least two minutes per session. To help your child get excited for the new school year, we recommend purchasing a new toothbrush (or pick one up while you’re here in the office).

Flossing – Kids can sometimes struggle with flossing. It requires dexterity that many kids don’t have, but you can help them overcome this hurdle by purchasing flossers. Flossers are small strips of floss attached to a plastic handle, which makes cleaning between teeth a breeze!

Fluoridated Mouthrinse – Kids need fluoride to help their teeth stay strong and healthy. One way you can help them get fluoride exposure is to encourage them to use a fluoride rinse. There are rinses marketed to kids, but some are better than others, so ask about it the next time you’re in the office.

A Dental Appointment Every Six Months

Contact our office to set up your child’s dental appointment and remember that they should be getting a cleaning and exam every six months. While you’re in for the back to school appointment, go ahead and make the next cleaning and exam visit in February/March. Get your child on a healthy hygiene routine and watch their smile blossom!
